Walked 3.11 Miles

I set off to run a 5k this day.  I felt great and positive.  Even the weather was beautiful and dry.  I wanted to run one last time before the Shamrock run this weekend.  I ran about .75 of a mile when the pain in legs got to the point that I could no longer run.  I ended up walking the rest of the 5k, down to Dairy Queen and back.  I’ve been having some pain for awhile, but I was thinking that it would get better soon.  It hasn’t and now it’s worse.  So I did some research on the web and I think I have an idea of what’s going on.  I’ve printed out some stretches to help strengthen my tendons and I’ll see my doctor soon.  All the reading I’ve done says that in a few weeks with rest and stretches, I’ll be better and pain free.  What does this mean for my future running, I’m still unsure.  Running has never been something I’ve done well or enjoyed.  Each time I take up running, I end up hurting myself.  So maybe I’m not meant to be a runner?  Maybe I’m better suited to walking. I’ll see.  I’m definitely not going to stop walking.  So I’m going to take it easy and do what I need to to get back in gear. I’ve decided to walk the Shamrock run with maybe a little bit of running every five minutes or so.  I, also, still have my sights on walking the 1/2 marathon in Euguene in May.

  1. I know firsthand how frustrating it is to want to be a runner, even a slow one, only to be sidelined by injuries. But over the past six months I’ve been walking instead of running, and it’s made a huge difference because now I can walk for miles and miles, where before I could only run short distances. Walking three times a week still burns a lot of calories and helps me stay fit. I’m happy being a walker!
