Using the kiln

Using the kiln

Posted on Mar 6, 2007

While dog sitting I got a chance to run my kiln.  Since the kiln lives at my partner’s house (my husband is deathly afraid of fire), I’ve never actually gone through the whole cycle of starting the kiln and washing the end pieces, etc.  I was a bit scared since it was my first time and I was alone in my friend’s house,  (I think my husband is starting to rub off on me a bit) but I conquered that fear...

Free Glass

Free Glass

Free is probably my favorite word.  I am a very frugal (OK, cheap) person.  My idea of a good time is going to Goodwill.  So when my kiln partner got an offer of free scrap glass, we were overjoyed.  My kiln partner owns The Funky Door Cafe (only the best coffee shop in all of Portland) and one of her regulars does glass full time.  He offered her glass that he had been keeping, but was too small for him to...

Dog Sitting

Dog Sitting

I spent all of last week dog sitting for my good friends while they were on vacation in Puerto Rico.  I always have a great time.  The two chihuahuas and cat are a handful, but they are also so much fun. I get a good taste of what it would be like to be a dog owner.  Still something I want to do in the future, but not for awhile.  Dog sitting gives you a taste of reality as to how much time and effort goes into...

My friend had her baby on Monday.  He was a month early, but the he and his mom are doing great.  He had to stay in the ICU to be monitored for several days, but all tests turned out negative. He is a lucky baby!  Although, it would be hard for him not to be lucky as he was born in the Golden Year of the Pig which according to Chinese Folklore, this is an event that occurs once in every 600 years and will ensure that a...

Glass Class

Glass Class

I am now taking another glass class.  I’ve been in it a couple of weeks now and these are the first things I have taken home.  I had taken this class because I thought I would have the opportunity to make large plates.  Since the class is so large, the biggest thing we can make are 4"x4" tiles.  So that is what’s above.  The piece on the left I’m very happy with.  This is a new...

Cat is my artist of the week.  I love the brilliant colors she uses.  She lists Frida Kahlo and Klimt as some of her inspirations.  You can definitely see that in her work. You can find more of her work here....

Short Fuses Glass

Short Fuses Glass

Last night I got to pick up my latest bunch of fused glass.  I only made 9 pieces, because I was feeling uninspired.  It’s amazing how great pieces look before they are fired and then afterwards sometimes they are a bit disappointing.  I’m chalking it all up to the learning curve. Still there were a couple of very cool pieces in the group. I made these two pieces exactly the same with one exception. ...

Whatcha Reading?

Last week a co-worker asked me how many books I had read in the past month.  She said every time she saw me, I was reading a different book.  Well, thanks to my blog I could go back and count.  In the month of January I read 8.5 books.  I was amazed.  I had no idea it was that many.  I’ve found since starting my job in September, I can’t stop reading.  I read while waiting for the bus and...

These two necklaces went to two of my friends for Christmas.  I really like using stencils with glass.  It definitely takes practice, but it sure is fun.  It gives a detail that you (well, at least I) can’t get piecing glass together.  I also like matching the pendants to the seed bead necklaces.  I think it gives the piece a nice finished look. This isn’t the best picture.  The flower is...

Body Art

My cousin showed me Guido Daniele’s incredible body art.  I had never seen anything like it.  It’s well being the face painting you see at county fairs.  I loved it and knew I had to use him for my artist of the week. His website had a lot more body art on it.  The full body stuff is great, but the paintings done on the hands is just...
