Secret Decoder Ring

Secret Decoder Ring

You might have read over on Handmade in Portland that my bestie Diana decided to move back to California.  Her decision was made many moons ago and she made the leap at the beginning of February.  This change has deeply affected me.  Besides losing my best friend, I also lost my Short Fuses and HiP business partner.   Her leaving coincided with my cousin's wedding, so for sanity sake I had to shelf...

This is my last post about my cousin's wedding!  I'm still hoping to create a few tutorials based on all the things I learned during this project, but that probably won't happen for a little while.  I figured a picture of the Conga line would be the perfect ending note.     The last thing I made for my cousin's wedding were large pom-pom flowers.  Again, I used Martha Stewart as a...

I've been looking for the perfect pair off glovelettes for ages!  I just couldn't find a pair that called to me until now.  I found this pair designed in Toronto at Kensington Market. this neighborhood filled with local art, amazing restaurants and a laid back attitude reminds me a lot of the Hawthorne neighborhood and is such a fun place to visit.  I wish I could have spent more time there this trip. In the...

Paper Flowers for the Wedding Cake

Paper Flowers for the Wedding Cake

Posted on Mar 10, 2011

My cousin and I had originally talked about having paper flowers on the wedding cake.  We had talked about the cake looking something like this one and using paper flowers would be an inexpensive way to spruce up a plain cake. Their wedding cakes ended up looking like their wedding invitation and weren't plain at all! There was really no way for the wedding cake guru to fit my paper flowers on these extraordinary...

Paper Flower Boutonnieres

Paper Flower Boutonnieres

Posted on Mar 9, 2011

I made 14 paper flower boutonnieres for the wedding. My cousin had asked that his and his husband's be red since they were going to wear white tuxes.  The rest of the wedding party's were done in white to offset the festive colors we were wearing.   I used the same technique I did for the flowers in the paper wreath.  These flowers were to be more like lilies, so I cut the crepe paper into tear drop shapes....

Printing Press in Toronto

While running errands with my cousin in Toronto before the wedding.  We stumbled upon this small printing press.  My cousin found beautiful thank you cards and it took some time for the very diligent and friendly guy to fold each card and wrap them up to travel. Since there was time and with permission, I took some photos of this beautiful space.      ...

Wedding Paper Flower Garlands

Wedding Paper Flower Garlands

Posted on Mar 7, 2011

One of the big projects for my cousin's wedding was making paper flower garlands.  We knew this would be an easy way to decorate a large space quickly.  I followed this tutorial and I highly recommend it.  I used vellum for my flowers and bought a 1.5 inch flower hand punch to punch them out.   This was the demo that I made to show  my cousin.  It helped me visualize how these would look...

Niagara Falls

The day before my cousin's wedding, the family had the opportunity to drive down to Niagara Falls which is only about 90 minutes from Toronto.  None of the 8 people going had seen the falls before which made it lots of fun for all of us. The Falls are more incredible than I could have imagined.  It was wonderful to see them in February with all the ice.  We were able to view them from the upper lookout of this...

Paper Flower Wreath

Paper Flower Wreath

Posted on Mar 4, 2011

One of the most challenging things I made for my cousin's wedding was this wreath.  It started as kind of an offhand thing that I thought would look pretty somewhere.  I was so in love with this paper flower wreath that I really wanted to make one for the wedding. This was originally going to hang where the food was being serviced at the reception.  My cousin gave me measurements beforehand.  When I was...

One of my favorite outings on this trip was visiting the Art Gallery of Toronto.  This amazing building was designed by Frank Gehry.  I was in awe of it's unique staircases and use of space.   The design created controversy when it was built, but I think it's beautiful!  The inside is gorgeous and some of the views you get are astounding! While the building is something that could be looked at for ages,...
