It’s Jolie with an O

I just received these address labels in the mail.  It’s a prime example of what happens when you have a name that’s not really the norm.  I’m used to getting Julie, Jody, Jolene and lately I’ve been getting people calling me Shirley.  I can’t quite figure that one out. I don’t mind it at all and usually I will answer to any name.  But, I do have to draw the line at Jollie.  Ever since starting middle school and on the first day of class, the teacher did role call and called me Jollie.  For a 7th grader, it’s very embarressing.  The funny thing is that my name is phonetically correct.  My mom (the elementary school teacher) made sure of that.  I also get people that ask if I know what my name means in French.  It’s comical when they get it wrong.  I just had a guy on the phone tell me that my name meant happy in French.  I had to gently correct him and tell him it really means pretty.  I have also had people ask me if my parents were drunk when they named me.  People are strange.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love my name.  I always know when someone calls my name, they are talking to me.  I’m very rarely in the same room as another Jolie.  My mom was also really good at buying me things that said Julie and turning the ‘u’ into an ‘o’.  I’m gaining more exceptence now that Angelina Jolie is so huge.  I must admit, I love reading headlines like ‘Jolie kicks ass’.

Ultimately, I’m just sad that I can’t use the address labels.  I love getting free stuff in the mail and could have put them to good use.
