Rafting down the Deschutes

Posted on Sep 8, 2010

On the way back from a cousin's wedding a few weeks ago, my cousin and I spent the night in Maupin at the Imperial River Company Hotel.  I had purchased a Groupon for half price rafting down the Deschutes.  This is something I've always wanted to do.  The Deschutes river is in my blood having grown up in Redmond, Oregon.

It was so convenient staying in the hotel and then walking 100 feet down the next morning to the rafting office.  Everyone was very friendly and helpful.

It was such a peaceful night with no TVs or phones in the room.  It gave us more time to sit on our balcony and watch the river and hundreds of swallows nesting under the bridge into Maupin.  The views were stunning.

Rafting the next day was more fun than I could have ever thought. I left my iphone safely on shore, because I knew it would get completely soaked.  This means no pictures of us rafting.  But the day was filled with nice people, competent guides and incredible landscape of my birth.   I deeply love the high desert of  Central Oregon and I don't get to visit enough.  It was a perfect day.
