Christmas Present – Dork Art

Posted on Jan 27, 2011

A few months before Christmas, I found a portafilter at Goodwill for a couple of bucks.  I instantly had a vision of what I could make Diana for Christmas.  She got a tattoo on her arm a year or so ago that she calls her Dork Badge.  It's the three most important tools she likes to have in her hand: a portafilter, pencil and a sewing needle.  After I bought the portafilter, the rest came together easily.  Gingham is another love that Diana is passionate about.  The frame and letters also came from Goodwill.

The piece was pretty easy to assemble.  I spray glued the fabric to poster board.  I didn't do this at first and there was just no way to get it in the frame without creating wrinkles.  I wired the portafilter to the poster board because it was to heavy for any kind of glue.  The needles are stuck into ribbon that was glued to the gingham.  The pencils are also glued.

I love how this turned out.  It's a unique piece of art that is tailored to her favorite things.

  1. I love it and can’t wait to get settled after the move so I can hang it up and see it every day. You’re the best!
